  7. Dear Gem-list subscribers,
  8.  
  9.     The purpose of the gem-list is obvious, and I absolutely appreciate
  10. your input and enthusiasm however some actions MUST be taken to cut down the
  11. mail volume.
  12.  
  13.     The list is hardly a few days old, and we have already got OVER 250
  14. messages, I am not sure if this is good or bad. Most developers and users
  15. cannot afford to read 60+ messages a day for several reasons. Maus Users have
  16. a 16k limit email base, other may have no time OR patience to wade through
  17. the messages, this is NOT to say they are not all valid but a SOLUTION must
  18. be found, the list is constantly changing subscribers because people cannot
  19. handle the message volume, and we are not even 100 subscribers yet. If we wish
  20. to get an agreement on a standard then we absolutely MUST get many gem
  21. developers (and important as well as influential) to agree on this. We cannot
  22. vote on something that is decided by a few people on this list, it would 
  23. defeat the purpose and the prestige that this list is meant to give, in other
  24. words I do not want this list to become a minority group of elitist association
  25. that decides a standard for atari developers, when some of the most important
  26. developers have unsubscribed (or not subscribed).

  28.     I feel this is IMPORTANT for the success and wide spread acceptance
  29. of this list, therefore one important task is to invite as MANY people into 
  30. this list as possible.

  32.     The problem is obvious, when we get 200-300 or more subscribers in a
  33. list that encourages discussion much more (as compared to the announce nature
  34. of other lists where input is not required) that the mail just multiplies. The
  35. purpose of a mailing list is to COMBINE people from CIS, Genie, Delphi, Usenet,
  36. Maus, FIdo all over the world, which is not possible otherwise, consider that
  37. commercial services charge for private email service via internet or local
  38. to the service (compuserve for instance charges like 50 to 75 cents per
  39. email to the internet at prime rates I think I forget) so please be considerate
  40. to commercial subscribers as well as this makes up a substantial amount of
  41. existing developers.

  43.     I am proposing that we ABSOLUTELY discuss only ONE topic at a time
  44. for a given time period, and if possible to digest it (in other words rather
  45. than respond to twenty mails, cut & paste and send it out once as a whole
  46. chunk like a mini report and respond). If this is not agreeable to you I
  47. am absolutely willing to entertain suggestions.

  49.     However..I will kindly ask all suggestions NOT to be sent to the
  50. gem-list but to my private account (ysiu@lexicor.com), and if the discussion
  51. get's a little wild about how the list should be managed I am certain that I
  52. can establish a mini-list to discuss how the gem-list should be moderated.
